Questioner

If a person breaks an oath and is strong enough to influence aura around them, are the consequences permanent, or temporarily manifested where the oath is broken?

Will Wight

Technically permanent, but there are ways to mitigate or avoid the consequences over time.

Questioner

What are the mechanics of a soul oath? Does the oath need to be made with equal consideration on each side? What happens if you break an oath? Can an oath be annulled by mutual agreement?

Will Wight

A soul oath is your spirit holding you to an agreement. When two people’s spirits are holding them to the same agreement, they resonate, and it creates a sort of subtle link.

Therefore, both people have to recognize that they have made an oath. Forcing someone to swear an oath under duress works, but is much weaker, because both participants know the oath is unfair. However, making a false oath isn’t really possible, because your spirit and the other person’s would recognize that you had made an oath.

Yes, you can annul an oath under mutual agreement.

If you break one, your spirit suffers the consequences. So you can have your madra channels or core injured, your madra can become more difficult to control, etc.

In the worst case, you can die, though those risks are exaggerated in rumor. Usually, if you do die from breaking an oath, it’s because your powers screwed up.

Some people with more powerful souls even influence the aura around them to hold them to their oath, meaning the natural world would curse them with consequences for oath-breaking.

Let's get some Sanderson up in here! Let's pit Simon against a Mistborn. I would still give the edge to Simon, but the push/pull on metals might give the Mistborn an opening to get a solid hit in.

I would say Simon vs a Knight Radiant, but we don't really know what an armor-bearing full-oathed knight is like yet.

Will Wight

Yeah, Simon vs. a Mistborn would be a BIT weird, because their powers are so similar. And pushing/pulling on metals would make things awkward for Simon at first.

But even if he drops his sword and fistfights, I still think he wins. They would need a significant supply of atium to even keep up with dolls + Nye essence, and even if they could, he seems stronger and more resilient than they are.

Based on what we've seen of the Knights Radiant, I suspect an oathed-up, Shardplate-armored, Shardblade-wielding Knight Radiant beats him handily. The armor is too big of a factor to ignore.

Questioner

Will Eithan still honor his favor to Malice?

Will Wight

Probably not. He was bound by that until he took off the shroud, and now he is not. So he is not necessarily bound by that unless he chooses to keep his word. Because while the more powerful a sacred artist you are, the tighter you are held, that does not continue to hold true as you advance in magic systems outside of Cradle. And he is, of course, the MOST advanced in magic systems outside of Cradle. So, he has a number of ways around that. So for one thing, as the Reaper he could just annul that oath. It just, didn't happen. He could, however, choose to abide by it. One of the things that a lot of Abidan do is they choose to abide by their oaths as kind of a manifestation or reflection of order.

True Ruler of None

What is Ziel Iron Body?

What is Ziel Jade Cycling Technique?

Does the Path of the Dawn Oath Goldsign have any benefital properties except goring people?

Will Wight

The first two are definitely notes questions for me. I could give you a general answer, but then I would risk being wrong.

And if I've learned anything, it's that whenever I say something like "Don't quote me on this, but I think it's X," people will quote me saying "It is absolutely X."

The Goldsign does not have any unusual properties except making hair care difficult. Unless, of course, I change my mind later.

True Ruler of None

Atleast it sounds like it is something specific. Which is always nice to know.

I didnt even think about the hair. No Wonder why he is depressed.

Will Wight

I always write down Iron bodies and Jade cycling techniques for every character, even though I don't mention them unless they ever come up in the story for some reason.

Questioner

Are Ziel's scripts a part of his path or a workaround around his core injury?

Will Wight

That is part of his path. That's kind of like the Path of the Last Oath that was briefly shown in Blackflame. He's forging scripts. So, therefore, that allows him to do certain specific things with his madra really well.

Questioner

Why is Reigan Shen seemingly breaking soul oaths left and right?

Will Wight

I do assure you there is a mechanism for that. He has a way to do it. It's something that I'm sure I'll get into if not in the next book, then the book after that. I'm certain that I'll get into that. It's not a huge thing. It's not a big universe defying...it's not another twist, right? He's not double Ozriel. It's just a mechanism he has that I'm sure will come into play.
