Zakariel, the Fox
The Way governs space, separating universe from universe, but its branches reach into every Iteration. Foxes use these branches like tunnels, slipping through the Way to reach their destinations without the headache of physical distance.
Virtually every Abidan has some ability as a Fox--at least the minimum spatial control required to enter and leave an Iteration. But only the best and fastest join the Fox Division: the heralds, scouts, and couriers of the Abidan.
Each Zakariel has always been fickle and unpredictable, perhaps as a side effect of the ability to travel anywhere at any time. This generation's Zakariel likes to meddle, as a godlike child with her toys. She tests the bounds of the Eledari Pact with her actions, and the Foxes beneath her have grown unruly and undisciplined. She has been chastised before the Court of Seven many times, but her personal power and ability have kept her from being pressured out of her mantle.
She is also an insatiable collector of anything she finds intriguing. Legendary weapons and rare creatures are displayed in her collection side by side with adorable stuffed animals and interesting leaves.
Questioner
How would a meal of the same ingredients be different if made from someone of higher rank? Suck as Turkey. Assuming a culinary path, how would that Turkey differ when made by a low-gold, underlord, sage, or Herald?
Will Wight
I'm not sure if you're talking about the level of the chef or the level of a sacred turkey. So I'm going to answer both. The problem with eating sacred beasts is that they get more intelligent as they advance. Most cultures have the same taboos against this as they do against cannibalism. However, there are a few exceptions. Some powerful individuals don't care about the rights of those weaker than them, and will consume sacred beasts regardless of their intelligence. Other cultures have no taboo, but make sure that the beasts have died of natural causes. And sometimes when sacred beasts are born instead of awakened from advancement, they have all the power and none of the intelligence. Though this can be hard to prove. So in the latter case, where you might have a Truegold-level sacred turkey with the intelligence of a normal bird, let's assume you ate it. It's going to be very tough, so it's difficult to cook, but if you prepared it perfectly, you would find it to be an intense experience. The concentrated blood aura in the body gives the meat a powerful flavor that you might find physically uncomfortable until you get used to it. When processed with the appropriate herbs, it can be delicious...although usually served in small portions. It can also help to refine the body, strengthening you and promoting physical health. As for a chef, here's what they say in the Blackflame Empire:A Lowgold chef will prepare you a wonderful meal.A Highgold chef will cook you the best dish you've ever had in your life.A Truegold chef will serve you your new favorite food.

Of the eight badges Lindon found, I'm assuming the halfsilver one is Lord, would the Goldsteel one then be Sage, or Herald?
Will Wight
That will be revealed.

In the scene prior to Sophara's semi final round, when she is reviewing her prizes she expresses disgust that Ghostwater is a product of Northstrider.
How the hell could she not have known this?
Will Wight
It’s mentioned in Wintersteel that she bought that drop of ghostwater. The Herald she bought it from knew where it came from.
Questioner
Has there ever been anyone on cradle who "messed up" their path yet still ascended to the Monarch level? Say someone who, out of ignorance, got a poorly matching iron body, or cultivated a really weird mix of auras.
Will Wight
This is a great question. I like this question.
The Beast King is a Herald (right below Monarch) who was crippled as a child while attempting to gain his Iron body. He refocused his Path into communicating with animals, using a mix of life and dream aura. Despite being unable to walk, he ended up befriending some truly ancient sacred beasts, and with their help baptized his body in soulfire and ascended to Underlord.
He's now many levels above that, and can walk just fine, but without the foundation of an Iron body he's physically not as dominant as his peers.
However, he's guarded by enormous behemoths from the deep places of the earth, so it balances out.

Was Lindon always intended to manifest a Void Icon? When was he originally slated to become a Sage, considering he'd have become a herald first?
Will Wight
Uhh, yeah, I had always intended him to manifest the Void Icon, yes, 100%. Yeah, that was planned a long time in advance, that's right around with where I talked about Eithan, in a previous series. The protagonist in that series had, it's prototype magic system had access to a Void Icon, and kind of an Order Icon. So, yeah. (Takes sip).
Questioner
Which sacred beast produces the best bristle material for the Aurelias Clans brooms?
Will Wight
There's a species of eagle whose tail-feathers have a unique relationship with wind aura. When you sweep such a feathered broom, the wind actually gathers up all the dust and loose debris in a small area and piles it neatly up. Scholars believe that the patterns in the feathers act as a script to produce such a unique effect, but no one really knows for sure. In battle, the Broom Sage used bristles from the tail of the Thorn Mountain Boar, a fifteen-story-tall boar that ate forests. The wood for his broom was taken from a branch of the Underworld Herald, a self-aware ancestral tree that once grew upside-down in an underground kingdom of blood and darkness.
Questioner
What is Fury's title?
Will Wight
I wish I could answer that question. It's a good question. But I actually do have a list of things that he was called, because he was, like I mentioned before, he was considered a god of war, a herald of war in some cultures. So I actually have some nicknames for him, I just don't remember. It's stuff like that, stuff about him being - yeah, Goku. That's his nickname.
Questioner
Lindon went from Overlord to Archlord with very little training this time. Does that belittle other Archlords?
Will Wight
So there's a time skim in Reaper. Kind of a montage. So while yes it is definitely short compared to other Overlords and Archlords, he did still have access to his hunger arm for part of that time. So he was able to advance faster and he has a great foundation, obviously. And he's got other, he's still got Eithan around at that point, he's got other resources he can call on, he's got other people to help. He had a lot of advantages there that made the transition from Overlord to Archlord quite a bit easier. One of the things I would like to do, and I probably shouldn't even mention this because it's going to sound like I'm promising this but I'm genuinely not, what I would like to do is go into some short stories about, so that I can cover some side details that didn't get covered in the main series. So some stuff they did during the down time in Reaper or even other books. Or where they just go in detail about what are the differences between Sages and Heralds and they're just exploring that. Scenes where that happens. I don't mind reading those in other books but they tend to make it out of mine just because they don't advance the plot. So if they're not necessary to your understanding of what's going on I don't keep them in.
Questioner
That's a promise?
Will Wight
No, that's not a promise. I don't promise that.
Questioner
Cradle: thirteen books and many stories confirmed.
Will Wight
No, stop it. BAD.

Do Sages ever become Heralds?
Will Wight
Yes, however... [meta answer warning] ...I might change my mind on that.
Questioner
Can you explain the difference between Herald and a Sage?
Will Wight
Yes
Questioner
Would you rather be a herald or a sage?
Will Wight
Sage. You get to do more cool things. I want to be able to talk in bold text... it'd be amazing.
Questioner
Since Heralds can regenerate their body like a sacred liver, can they cut off pieces of themselves to use as dead matter in soul smithing?
Will Wight
I mean, they could. That’d be painful and highly inefficient, but that is something they could do.
Questioner
Underlords vs. Underlord+
Will Wight
The Sword Sage and Li Markuth are both roughly two stages above Underlord.
The three entities listed by Suriel as the top of the Cradle food chain are FIVE stages above Underlord, including one big leap (like the difference between Truegold and Underlord, it's only one stage, but it's a big one). The Dreadgods are a threat on THEIR level--and notice that Suriel said the 8-Man Empire, Sha Miara, and Northstrider could save Sacred Valley from them. She didn't say they could destroy the Dreadgods.
The BF Emperor is the one person in the Empire who is a level over Underlord.
The EE Emperor is about his level, although since they're using different magic systems, it's less about stages and more about what they can and can't do to counter one another.
